Best Rated Basketball Shoes: How to Actually Choose

Every ranked list of basketball shoes agrees on one thing: buy high-tops, because they protect your ankles.

The research does not agree. Neither, entirely, do the medical bodies. There is a real disagreement here between organisations that both know what they are talking about. If you are choosing a shoe, it is worth knowing rather than being handed one side as settled fact.

So this is not a ranked list. It is what the evidence actually says, where the authorities differ, and what to judge a shoe on once you know.

What Basketball Actually Does to You

Worth establishing first, because it explains what the shoe is for.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons states that "The fast-paced action of basketball can cause a wide range of injuries, most often to the foot, ankle, and knee". Ankle sprains are common. The American Academy of Family Physicians puts the estimated incidence at "up to 7 per 1,000 person-years". It notes they are "most often inversion injuries to the lateral ligaments of the ankle".

An inversion injury is the ankle rolling inward, which is what happens when you land awkwardly or plant a foot mid-direction-change. That is the specific event a basketball shoe is supposed to help with, and it is the claim the next section examines.

So what does this mean when you are standing in a shop? That the shoe is being sold to you on a promise about one particular injury, and that promise is contested.

The Disagreement Nobody Mentions

Here are two positions, both from credible sources.

The medical bodies recommend a higher collar. The American Podiatric Medical Association advises that basketball shoes should "Have high ankle construction that supports the ankle during quick changes in direction". AAOS notes that "The higher upper is commonly found on basketball shoes to offer increased stability to the ankle during jumping and landing".

The studies do not find the effect. A review published by MUSC Health, written by an athletic trainer, summarises the evidence. A 1993 study of 622 subjects found "no significant difference in ankle sprains while wearing a high-top shoe compared to a low-top shoe". A 2014 study found the high-top shoes tested "did not reduce ankle inversion angle". A 2019 systematic review supported "no superiority of either high-top or low-top shoes in preventing ankle sprains".

Named researchers put it more bluntly still. Jay Hertel, a professor of athletic training at the University of Virginia, is quoted as saying "There's no evidence that different types of basketball shoes prevent ankle injuries". Howard Osterman, team podiatrist for the Washington Wizards, is quoted in the same piece: "The technology has gotten better, but the shoe by itself is probably not the end-all".

How can both be true? Because they are answering slightly different questions. A higher collar does restrict movement and add a sense of stability, which is what the medical guidance describes. The studies measure something else: does that translate into fewer sprains in real play. There the effect does not reliably appear.

The practical conclusion is the one MUSC reaches: choose on comfort and fit rather than on collar height, and put the effort into the things that do have evidence behind them.

What Does Prevent Ankle Injuries

If the shoe is not the answer, something has to be.

MUSC's review points at "proper warm up, ankle and core strengthening, and balance exercises" rather than collar height. AAOS states that "Ankle supports can reduce the incidence of ankle sprains", which is a different thing from a shoe: a brace or support worn in addition to it.

The American Academy of Family Physicians goes further for anyone already injured. It recommends that a patient "wear an ankle brace during sports participation to prevent recurrent ankle sprains for up to 12 months".

That is the single most actionable thing on this page. If you have sprained an ankle before, a brace has published support behind it for a year afterwards, and no shoe does. Spending £150 on a shoe while skipping a warm-up is optimising the wrong variable.

What the Shoe Does Need to Do

Collar height aside, the guidance is consistent on several points, and these are what to judge on.

A thick, stiff sole. APMA specifies that basketball shoes should "Have a thick, stiff sole that provides support for impact". Basketball is a jumping and landing sport, and the sole is doing impact work rather than propulsion work.

Solid tread and grip. AAOS notes that "Court shoes have a solid tread and typically are made of soft leather", and its basketball guidance says to select shoes that "fit snugly, offer support, and are non-skid".

A stable heel counter. UCSF Health advises that "The heel and heel counter (back of the shoe) should be very stable". That is the stiff cup around your heel, and it is the component whose failure ends a shoe's useful life while the rest still looks fine.

Arch support matched to your foot. UCSF adds that "People whose feet pronate or who have low arches should choose shoes that provide support in both the front of the shoe and under the arch".

Notice that none of these are brand claims. They are structural properties you can assess by handling a shoe.

Do Not Play in Running Shoes

The clearest instruction in all of the guidance, and the most commonly ignored.

APMA states that running shoes "are made for high-impact forward motion and should not be used for sports with lateral movement". Basketball is almost entirely lateral movement: cutting, shuffling, changing direction.

A running shoe is built to be stable front to back and is comparatively narrow and soft at the sides. Load it sideways and it deforms in exactly the direction you did not want. This is a genuine mechanical mismatch rather than a marketing distinction.

APMA's threshold for when this matters is usefully concrete: use sport-specific footwear "If you participate in a certain sport at least two to three times a week". Below that, UCSF suggests cross-training shoes are "an overall good choice" while still noting it is best to use shoes designed for the sport.

So the honest answer for someone playing once a fortnight is that a cross-trainer will do. For someone playing twice a week, it will not.

Why the Rankings Disagree With Each Other

Worth understanding, because it explains why reading five reviews leaves you no clearer than reading one.

Sports medicine sources are consistent that a basketball shoe has to do several jobs that conflict. Cushioning absorbs landing impact, and it does so by being soft, which reduces the stability you want when planting a foot sideways. Stability comes from stiffness and structure, which adds weight. Weight is what a player notices most and what marketing leans on hardest. Grip has to be sufficient for hard cuts without being so absolute that a foot stops while the leg keeps travelling.

This is the point Joseph Hamill makes about the difficulty of designing all those characteristics into one shoe. Every model is a set of trade-offs, and a reviewer who prioritises court feel will rank differently from one who prioritises impact protection, with neither being wrong.

That has a practical consequence for how you read any list. A shoe at the top of a ranking is top for a particular playing style, on a particular surface, at a particular weight. If those do not describe you, the ranking is answering someone else's question.

It also explains the honest limit of this article. Nobody, including us, can tell you which shoe is best without knowing how you play and what your feet are like. What the sources above give you instead is a set of properties to check, which is more durable than any list, since it still works next season when every model has been replaced.

The Court Surface Matters Too

Rarely mentioned in reviews written by people who play on one floor.

Basketball shoes are designed around indoor court surfaces, where AAOS notes that court shoes have "a solid tread". An outdoor court is a different material entirely: rougher, dirtier, and considerably more abrasive.

Two consequences follow. Outdoor play wears an outsole down much faster, so a shoe that would last a season indoors may not last a term outdoors. And a tread optimised for a clean wooden floor performs differently on dusty concrete, where grip depends more on clearing debris than on the rubber compound.

If you play mostly outdoors, which is common for students without club access, expect to replace shoes more often and to prioritise outsole durability over the qualities that reviews of indoor play emphasise. That is not a reason to buy something different so much as a reason to set your expectations, and to avoid spending heavily on a shoe whose most expensive features you will not be using.

How to Fit Them

Published, specific and worth following exactly.

AAOS states there should be "at least a 1/2-inch space between your longest toe and the tip of your shoes". It adds that "The toe box should have ample room so that you can wiggle your toes".

It also gives an instruction people routinely skip: "Wear the same type of sock that you typically wear when you are participating in the sport for which you are buying the shoes". A thick sports sock changes the fit by more than half a size, so a shoe fitted in thin socks will be tight in play.

APMA adds a recommendation worth taking if you have any history of foot problems: "Make sure to have your feet professionally measured by today's podiatrist to find a correctly sized shoe".

One point from the wider evidence is worth pairing with all of this. Joseph Hamill, a biomechanist at UMass Amherst, is quoted observing that "It's really difficult to design all of those characteristics into one basketball shoe". Cushioning, stability, grip and weight pull against each other. There is no shoe that maximises all four, which means the ranked lists promising one are describing a compromise and calling it a winner.

When to Replace Them

The part almost nobody tracks, and the numbers here are genuinely surprising.

AAOS reports that the foam used in midsoles "starts to show structural damage after 120 miles", and that at 500 miles "the shoe has lost 45% of its initial shock absorption capabilities".

Forty-five per cent, on a shoe that still looks entirely serviceable. This is why the visual check misleads people: the upper and the outsole outlast the part actually doing the protective work.

For a timeframe, APMA suggests replacing running shoes "after 600–800 miles of running or walking, or every 6–8 months", and UCSF suggests regular runners replace shoes "every six months, more frequently if an avid runner".

⚠️ Both of those figures are stated for running rather than basketball, and mileage is a poor unit for a court sport. Treat them as an indication of how quickly midsole foam degrades rather than as a basketball replacement schedule. The practical version: if you play regularly, expect the cushioning to be meaningfully worse within a season, and check the heel counter by pressing it between finger and thumb. If it folds easily, the shoe has stopped doing its job.

Buying Without a Ranked List

You will still have to buy something, so here is how to do it on the criteria above.

Try them on late in the day, wearing your playing socks, and check the half-inch of toe room.

Handle the shoe before wearing it. Press the heel counter. Flex the sole. A sole that twists easily is not the thick, stiff platform the guidance describes.

Ignore the collar height debate and buy what feels comfortable and secure, which is where the evidence points.

Buy for your foot, not the model. Arch support needs differ, and no ranking accounts for yours. If you already know you pronate or have low arches, that single fact should narrow your options more than any review will.

Multi-brand retailers are useful precisely because these criteria are brand-agnostic and you want to compare shapes across makers, which is easier against a full brand list than one maker's range. Foot Locker is one such option, and it publishes return windows worth knowing before you order online: 45 days from shipment in the US, requiring items "unworn and in new condition with the original tags". In the UK and Europe the window is 28 days. The practical consequence is the same wherever you are: try them indoors, and keep the box. A shoe taken onto a court is no longer returnable.

College Life, the global club for young internationals, hears the same thing from members who join a university team after moving. They bought on a ranking, on a phone, before they arrived, and the shoe did not fit the way the review promised.
