What the Heck is Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering and Why Should I Buy It?

Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering. If you think it looks like someone rolled something over their keyboard and created this endless mumble-jumble of a Dutch word, you're not the only one. Don't even worry about pronouncing it, either, because there's an easy translation in English. Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering simply means liability insurance. Unlike health insurance, it is not mandatory in the Netherlands to purchase an 'aansprakelijkheidsverzekering' but it is highly recommended. Here's why.

1. Student life can get messy

As an international student in the Netherlands, you'll likely participate in a lot of different activities, from meeting new people to travelling around Europe. This means you'll be enjoying many adventures, which could potentially lead to an accident here or there.

Imagine this: you're sitting in the library with some new friends when you accidentally spill your coffee over a friend's laptop. Oops. A simple accident like this could end up costing you a couple thousand euros. Liability insurance is a great way to protect yourself from facing these unfortunate expenses.

Also, it is no secret that drinking culture is part of student life. Having a bit too much alcohol in your system might get you somewhat clumsy and accidentally break your best friend's leg. Luckily, liability insurance also covers you for any medical costs that may occur if you, for example, injure someone. Let your sober-self keep your tipsy-self insured.

2. Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering is cheap

Compared to the thousands of euros in damage you could accidentally create in a day, aansprakelijkheidsverzekering is actually very cheap. Most providers charge somewhere between three and five euros per month, for a total of around fifty euros a year. This is nothing compared to having to buy, for example, a brand new laptop for your friend. Buy one beer less a month and insure yourself for thousands in potential damages.

Most liability insurances provide coverage worldwide, which is very convenient if you are planning on travelling during your studies.

3. You might be borrowing things

Whether you're borrowing a laptop, some books, or furniture, you always have the risk of them breaking or getting damaged in some way. To avoid getting slammed with fees at the end of your use period, you should definitely purchase a liability insurance.

There is typically no limit on the number of times you can declare damage to your provider. Usually, providers just cap how much in damage fees they'll provide for your accident. For many providers, this is 250,000 euros.

What isn't covered by Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering?

Accidents caused by an automobile are not covered. If you have a car accident, you need to have a liability insurance specifically for automobile insurance. This includes motorized scooters.

Anything you rent is not covered by liability insurance, either. For example, if you rent chairs from a company for an event, breaking a chair will not be covered.

The benefits of liability insurance clearly outweigh the small number of things it does not cover. Allow yourself to live worry-free during your study time in the Netherlands. Your budget is probably already just enough to make it to the end of every month, so don't give yourself any more unnecessary unexpected costs. Get insured, get protected.
