We all know sleeping in is one of the best feelings in the world. But then there’s that moment when you’re blissfully unaware of anything but your comfortable sheets and BAM. Your alarm is going off for the 50th time (slight exaggeration) and you’ve overslept. Since we are starting to get closer to the new school semester, maybe it’s about time to re-evaluate your morning routine. Are you more of a person who wakes up 5 minutes before class, skips breakfast and ends up coming to your lecture in your PJs? Or perhaps you are that guy who tells himself that ‘this time I’ll go to the gym before my 10am’. But then as that guy, you spend 45 minutes scrolling through mindless memes on Facebook.
We love memes, but we don’t love bad mornings. That’s why having a morning routine can (literally) make your day. Here’s how to become that morning person you’ve always dreamed about (ha, see what we did there).
Give yourself enough time
You can get a lot done in the mornings; your workout, your planning, even some last-minute essay-writing if you’re fast. If you have morning classes, you should use your morning (and morning routine) to get ready for the day. Maybe you have a morning shift and you need to wake up early for your new part-time job. A morning routine is a great way to prepare yourself for a busy schedule. If you have classes later in the day, it’s still worth getting up early in the morning to get shit done. If you sleep in half the day, that’s hours worth of time you could have used to study or work instead of staying up till 3am trying to get your work done…
You should aim to create a morning routine that allows you to check off your to-do list. For example, if you need to take a shower, put your makeup on, go to the gym, make breakfast and plan your day, you need to plan for that! If you only really need to get up, get dressed, and down some coffee, then that’s how much time you need.
Being in a rush in the mornings is not cool. We’d rather have lots of time to spare so that our day starts off well.
Don’t hit snooze!
Hitting snooze enough times will make it go away, right? By hitting the snooze button, you are not only wasting your time but you are also making it harder for yourself to wake up. You are actually disrupting and damaging your natural sleep cycle! When your alarm goes off, try to get up immediately instead of lying in bed pretending your responsibilities don’t exist.
Your alarm exists for a reason, so use it!
Eat breakfast, yo!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day (quote: mom). Eating breakfast is actually the most important meal, because you’re fuelling your body for the day to come. The best breakfast foods to eat are those filled with protein – like eggs or yoghurt and a banana, for example. Or, try some new Dutch recipes! Breakfast doesn’t have to take long if you give yourself enough time.
Exercise? I thought you said extra fries…
Fries can wait till later (sorry). In the morning, exercising is one of the best things you can do because it really wakes you up and gives you energy for the day ahead. You could go to the gym for a half-hour or so, go on a short run, or work out in your room. Moreover, you don’t have to be hardcore at all! You could eve do some light stretching or a morning yoga routine. You can easily find short workout routines online, or just go with the flow. Plus, if you lack the motivation to go for that run later in the day (after those fries), getting your workout done and dusted in the morning can make you feel seriously accomplished!
The little things matter too
Things like making your bed or listening to music can make your morning so much better. Reading a book can be another great way to start your morning (check out the best books for students here). You could also try planning out your day to make sure you know what’s happening that week. It comes in handy when you have lists of things you need to do that day or places to go instead of wandering around, lost, not knowing what your day is going to look like. Now, planning might not be for everyone, but at least knowing your daily schedule is important.
Often, doing the most time-consuming or daunting thing straight in the morning can make life seem easier. For example, if you have an essay due next week and you really hate writing it, get some of it done in the morning. You won’t have to think about it afterwards, and how much worse than that can the rest of the day get?
Example of a kick-ass morning routine:
- Wake up 1.5 hours before needing to leave the house
- Get up, open the blinds and drink a large glass of water
- Do some exercise (20 minutes)
- Shower, dress and all the other things that go with it
- Make and eat breakfast (and coffee, did you really think we’d forget coffee?)
- Plan the day – things to do, places to be, people to see…
Obviously, you can tailor your morning routine to your own life! If you love going to the gym, add those extra 20 or 30 minutes. Or, if you take an hour to do your makeup, make sure you have enough time! And if you want to schedule some time to get some work done, do it! Every person has their own routine that works best for them.
Okay, so why is this important?
Morning routine = life routine
A morning routine will set the tone of your day; if you have a good morning, you’ll most likely have a good day. It’s proven that doing any action often enough leads to it becoming a habit. After a while, you will start going through the motions of your routine automatically. It’s been said (often enough, we think) that morning people are the ones who get the most done- it’s kind of true. Plus, once you master that morning routine, you won’t be snoozing no more (at least 60% of the time…).
