What are the basic requirements?

Anyone who is more than 18 years old and rents a house or apartment in the Netherlands can apply for housing allowance. To do that, you must:

  • Register in a Dutch municipality and have a BSN number.
  • Have a Dutch residence permit or EU/EEA nationality.
  • Receive employment income that’s below the threshold.
  • Live in an independent residence (with your own front door and private facilities such as kitchen, shower, and toilet).
